Quiz shows have captivated audiences for as long as we can recall. When we think of these shows, one of the initial names that springs to mind is that of Bob Barker, an entertainment icon and household name who skyrocketed to fame when he graced the stage of The Price is Right in 1972.
Barker, the show’s host for an impressive 35 years, clinched 14 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host and four Emmys for his executive producer role over the years.
Reflecting on his career triumphs, Barker attributed much of his success to his late wife, who provided him with the confidence to pursue his aspirations. In 2008, he expressed, “She gave me the confidence to even try to do what I set out to do. She didn’t just urge me on, she worked right at my side.”
Despite his advanced age, Barker, who is approaching 99, reportedly takes only one prescription medication for his thyroid, according to Burnet. She humorously quipped about the routine inquiries regarding his medications, stating, “He’s going to be 99, and he takes one prescription medication, and that’s for his thyroid. So, he does not take anything for blood pressure, cholesterol, the umpteen other things that most people take as they grow older.” She emphasized that Barker, despite his age, maintains good health and a sharp sense of humor, attributing his well-being to a charmed life.
However, Barker has faced medical challenges over the years, including surgery more than two decades ago to address a partially blocked artery and reduce the risk of stroke. In 2002, he experienced a stroke, followed by prostate surgery. Additionally, Barker has dealt with back issues and undergone treatment for mild skin cancer.
As a vegetarian, Burnet ensures that her partner receives the necessary supplements. She clarified that the supplements are not meant to replace meals but rather to enhance overall nutrition. Burnet’s proactive approach stems from a concern for Barker’s well-being, noting, “He was looking tired and kind of frail, not just not looking healthy. And, you know, if you’re going to be a vegetarian and vegan, you better know what you’re doing.”
