Swift returned to the stage in Rio, only two days after her concertgoer Ana Clara Benevides Machado passed tragically.
Due to the intense heat wave Brazil is presently experiencing, Taylor was forced to postpone her act on Saturday night, marking the start of Night 2 of her Eras Tour in Brazil.
Taylor always plays two or three surprise songs throughout her concerts. Usually, these are tracks from her catalog that she has never played live before.
Given the situation, the surprise songs she sang on Night 2 were very moving. Bigger Than the Whole Sky was the second surprise song of the evening, and fans noticed a small difference in Swift’s tone as well as her mood.
The lyrics of the song, which many saw as Swift bidding adieu to Ana, go as follows:
“Goodbye, farewell, farewell I have so much to live without and so much to pine for, and we will never get to meet again. You were more than the entire sky and more than just a passing moment. What would have happened if Who ought to have been in your place? You are the one who could have been.
“Every single thing to come has turned into ashes ‘Cause it’s all over, it’s not meant to be So I’ll say words I don’t believe,” were the original lyrics of a later part of the song.
But Taylor sang, “Every single thing I touch has turned into ashes,” throughout the performance.
Taylor Swift is devastated by Ana’s demise. One of the singer’s Brazilian admirers fell unexpectedly from heat stroke just before her performance began, according to a statement she released.
